Dog Vaccinations

To own a dog in New Jersey, your dog must be vaccinated. The following vaccinations must be performed on your dog by the age of six weeks (puppies): Distemper, Canine Infectious Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus and Coronavirus. The process should be repeated at eight, 12 and 16 weeks. At six months, you should begin your rabies vaccination treatments and continue these annually. Depending upon where you go to have your dog vaccinated, the prices differ. Local, state-funded clinics will charge you somewhere between $20 and $50. Other private veterinarians may charge you between $75 and $100.

Leash Laws

The leash law in New Jersey is very direct. It states that dog owners are liable for any damage caused to someone else. This is true for first-time offenders as well. Dog owners are responsible even if they never had a history of attacking others. Dog parks are the best place to take puppies and older dogs for the off-leash experience. There are always some in every neighborhood. If you are traveling however, you can include your dog in on great beaches and hiking trails with breathtaking views. New Jersey does not have any laws banning dogs from public places. No statewide law exists that requires pet owners to be responsible but, many cities have their own laws. In New Jersey, if you have a dog that is older than seven months, you must report to the county clerk, register your dog and apply for a license. You can select one-year or three-year durations. To register and license your dog, you must present documented proof that your dog has been treated for the prevention of rabies in the form of a vaccination. Additionally, the vaccination must last a minimum of 10 months while in the 12-month license time frame. In other words, your dog must be covered for at least 10 of the 12 months that he is licensed. The fees vary but the maximum annual charge is $21. Your dog will be assigned a numbered metal tag which will help with identification purposes. There are also fees that the clerk who issues your license charges. Clerks collect fees for every dog that receives a license; the fee is $1. They also collect $3 for each dog that is not neutered. The penalty for failing to register and license your dog in New Jersey differs by county and municipality. Failure to renew is a little more specific. There is a $5 late fee if you don't renew your dog's license before the expiration date. If your dog goes missing and is located by the police, you may face a fine when they discover that your dog is not properly tagged and licensed. Dog licenses are not specific to any size or breed of dog. All dogs, regardless of breed must be licensed in New Jersey. Microchips have proven effective in locating missing dogs however they are optional, not required.

Dogs in Vehicles

You can take your dog with you when you go on errands or just the quick circle around the block, but it is highly recommended that your dog ride in the backseat and in a carrier where they can be restrained. You may be subjected to anti-cruelty laws if you are stopped by a police officer and your dog is not secured properly. You can locate carries at most pet supply stores. It is illegal for you to place your dog in the truck bed of a moving vehicle. It is also illegal to leave your dog unattended in a locked car. You will be subjected to a fine for animal cruelty that ranges between $250 and $1000.

Dog Parks
